The beginning of Malda Division was made when Malda-Chamagram section was trasferred from N. F. Railway to Eastern Railway and attached to Howrah Division in November 1982. With effect from July 1984, the same section was converted into a new Division with Headquarters at Malda, as the seventh Division of Eastern Railway. With the setting up of EC Railway Danapur, Dhanbab and Mughalsarai Divisions have become part of EC Railway. Thus, today Malda Division is the fourth Division of Eastern Railway. It was not until May 1985 that Nw Farakka-Azimganj section of BAK (Barharwa-Azimganj-Katwa) loop was transferred to Malda Division. To this was added New Farakka-Barharwa-Kiul section of the Sahibganj loop in July 1985. The Division exists as such till to day, though the project Report envisaged extension up to New Jalpaiguri. Traffic and freight control started operation from Malda in November 1985, with a sub-control office at Sahibganj.
Malda, the civil district headquarters and the seat of the fourth Divisional Office of Eastern Railway, occupies an important place in the annals of North Bengal. Famous for sericulture and silk industry, it is close to Gour and Pandua - the medieval capitals of the 14th century rulers. Rajmahal, Sahibganj and Bhagalpur with more than two hundred years of mercantile background having roots dating back to the middle of the 17th century, still thrive successfully as prime commercial towns of the Division. On the bank of the Ganges stands the majestic Munger Fort, associated with the memories of Mir Kasim, Nawab of Bengal fighting the last battle with the British. The temple of Lord "AJAGAIBINATHA" rising from the middle Ganges in Sultanganj from where thousands of devotees take the holy water to BAIJNATHDHAM, depicts the religious and spiritual fervour of this region.
Malda Division running through seven civil districts of three States, Murshidabad amd Malda of West Bengal, Sahibganj of Jharkhand and Munger, Bhagalpur, Lakhisarai & Banka of Bihar, is largely single line Division with a high density of traffic.
